SSIS is a Sql Server 2005 ETL tool provided by Microsoft for extracting the data from a variety of data sources, transforming the data according to the specific business requirements and then loading the data into the destination data source. The source data and the destination data can be any connection source such as Excel, csv file or Sql Server Databse.

SSIS is included as a component for SQL Server 2005 and above - it includes graphical tools and wizards for designing and running packages. The package designer is runs as a designer within the Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) - a slimline version of the Visual Studio environment. The packages are saved on the local machine by BIDS, and need then to be deployed to the destination server.

An Example of how we use  Integration Services

Take the example of a project we recently worked on where the client needed to migrate existing data from a diverse set of Excel, Access and text file data sources into a new SQL Server 2005 database. The source data was in a variety of data formats, and was of varying quality with validation in some areas and not in others. In short, it neither had the same structure, or quality as that required to load up the new database.

We designed a package to clean and transform the source data, providing up front validation of the data quality before transforming and loading the data into the new database. Exception reports were produced by the portable  package in a test environment, and, finally, the migration was run successfully on live.  This sort of project is typical of the kind of work we do with SQL SSIS - handling and manipulating diverse sets of data in a fast moving environment.
